| Comments | The death of the democratic hero, killed while thinking of the wife and children at home. A variation on the title was later given to the English translation of Erich Maria Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front (called in German Im Westen nichts Neues), in which the death of the protagonist at the end is as meaningless as the death of the sentry in this poem. |
